Universal Studios Japan Christmas 2026 (Nov 13–Jan 17): Light Up the Night, Joy of Lights Returns, and the Kids Free Pass Overseas Visitors Can't Buy

Universal Studios Japan's holiday season, Universal Holiday Wonders ~Discover U!!!~, runs from Friday, November 13, 2026 to Sunday, January 17, 2027 in Osaka, as part of the park's 25th anniversary year. The headline night shows, Light Up the Night: Christmas Celebration and Joy of Lights, start later, on November 25, and end on January 11. The family deal everyone in Japan is talking about, the Holiday Kids Free Pass, is for residents of Japan only. This guide sets out the official dates, what you can and cannot buy from Canada, and what a 1-Day Studio Pass costs on each date.

The short version

• Event dates: Universal Holiday Wonders runs Nov 13, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027.
• Night shows: Light Up the Night (about 30 minutes) and Joy of Lights (about 10 minutes) run Nov 25 to Jan 11 at Gramercy Park in the New York area. There are no shows on Dec 31.
• Joy of Lights is back for the first time in nine years. It projects guests' messages to the people they love onto a screen.
• Front-of-stage viewing: the "Light Up the Night / Joy of Lights" Special Viewing Area Entry Ticket starts at ¥1,700.
• Holiday Kids Free Pass: one child (4 to 11) free with one adult, from ¥8,400 for the pair, but only residents of Japan can buy it.
• Adult 1-Day Studio Pass, Nov 13 to Jan 2: ¥9,400 to ¥11,900, depending on the date. Jan 3 to 17 were not yet on sale when we checked.

What is on, and when

Show times. USJ's English show pages list a typical pattern of Light Up the Night at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Joy of Lights at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (Japan time). Both are at Gramercy Park, so you can stay in one place for both. USJ says times differ by day and posts each day's Show Schedule about one week ahead, so check it before your visit.

Messages for Joy of Lights. USJ is taking message submissions from Sep 28 to Dec 14, 2026, and the messages shown are picked by lottery from advance applications. Details are on the official site.

Halloween is still on until Nov 8

If you are there in early November, the park is still in its autumn event. Halloween Horror Nights runs until Sunday, November 8, 2026. The Resident Evil attraction, Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive at Stage 18, stays open longer, until December 27, 2026. It is rated R-15: no admission for guests 14 or under, and it needs a Timed Entry eTicket or a Universal Express Pass. So a visit between Nov 25 and Dec 27 can include both the holiday night shows and the Resident Evil attraction.

The Special Viewing Area ticket

The "Light Up the Night / Joy of Lights" Special Viewing Area Entry Ticket gets you a spot right in front of the stage without waiting in line.

• Price: from ¥1,700 (tax included).
• Valid: Nov 25, 2026 to Jan 11, 2027. On sale until Jan 11, 2027.
• Where to buy: USJ's official website and Lawson Ticket (website).
• Good to know: the area has standing and seated sections, and you may not get your preferred one if it is full. You cannot bring chairs or other raised seating. Lawson Ticket's listing notes that park admission needs a separate Studio Pass.

The Holiday Kids Free Pass: residents of Japan only

This is the 25th-anniversary offer getting the most attention in Japan: buy the Holiday Kids Free Pass and one child aged 4 to 11 enters free with one adult. The price for the adult-and-child pair starts at ¥8,400, against a normal price from ¥13,900. It is valid for entry Nov 13 to Dec 30, 2026.

The catch for visitors from Canada: USJ says the ticket can only be bought by residents of Japan who can upload an official ID showing the child's age when they buy. If you are visiting from abroad, plan on regular tickets for each person. Related perks (half-price kids' sets, the churro and popcorn bucket deals, and the "Holiday Kids Free Plan" hotel offers) are for Holiday Kids Free Pass holders, so they do not apply to regular tickets either.

Adult 1-Day Studio Pass prices by date

Studio Passes are sold for a fixed date, and the price changes from day to day. These are the adult (12+) 1-Day Studio Pass prices on USJ's Official Web Ticket Store at the time we checked.

A few patterns:

• The cheapest days are early-December weekdays at ¥9,400, and they fall inside the night-show period.
• Fridays in November and Dec 4 are priced higher than the Saturdays after them (¥11,900 against ¥10,900). Check the exact date rather than assuming weekends cost more.
• Christmas Day through Dec 30 is ¥11,900 every day. Christmas Eve is ¥9,900.
• Children (4 to 11) were ¥5,800 to ¥7,400 over the same dates. The store notes that 12-year-olds still in elementary school pay the child price.

The store also notes that sold-out dates cannot be selected and that tickets cannot be cancelled after purchase. USJ does not sell tickets face to face at the park, so buy online before you go. Prices are in yen; your card issuer sets the exchange rate.

USJ or Tokyo Disney for a December trip?

USJ's season runs longer, into mid-January, and its holiday night shows continue after Christmas, until Jan 11.

Before you buy: a checklist

• [ ] Want the night shows? Pick a date from Nov 25 to Jan 11, and avoid Dec 31.
• [ ] Check the price for your exact date. It changes by day.
• [ ] From Canada, budget for regular tickets for each person. The Holiday Kids Free Pass is for residents of Japan only.
• [ ] Want a front-of-stage spot? Add a Special Viewing Area Entry Ticket (from ¥1,700).
• [ ] Visiting with teens 14 or under? They cannot enter Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive.
• [ ] Check the official Show Schedule about a week before your visit.
