If you are trying to book an early-season ski trip to Japan, the useful question is not "when does winter start" but which lifts are planned to turn on, and on what day. Most of the big names have now published their 2026/27 dates on their own sites. This guide lists them in order, notes what actually opens on day one, and links each date to the resort's own page.

One rule before the table: every opening date below is a plan, not a promise. Each resort says its dates depend on snow and weather. Hokkaido and Hakuba resorts in particular often open with only part of the mountain running.

Opening dates at a glance (2026/27)

Hokkaido: Sapporo first, then the big resorts a week later

Sapporo Kokusai (Nov 20) and Sapporo Teine (Nov 21) are the earliest natural-snow openings on the list, and both are day-trip distance from Sapporo city. Teine's own page notes that its Olympia Zone does not start until Dec 5, so opening weekend there is the upper Highland Zone.

The destination resorts that most international skiers fly in for — Niseko United, Rusutsu, Kiroro and Furano — all plan to open on the same day, Saturday, Nov 28.

  • Niseko United lists all four areas (Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono) from Nov 28. Its "Early Season" runs Nov 28 – Dec 11, and night skiing is listed from Dec 12. Note: Niseko says Early Season passes are not available for purchase online — you buy them on site.
  • Rusutsu lists the ski area as opening Nov 28 "(planned)" and explicitly warns that the slope opening may be postponed if there is not enough snow.
  • Kiroro's season-pass guide gives the season as Nov 28, 2026 – May 5, 2027, marked tentative.
  • Furano opens its Furano Zone on Nov 28; the Kitanomine Zone is listed from late December. The resort also says only some runs and lifts operate at opening and the area expands as snow builds.

Flying in from North America? This winter adds two seasonal nonstops into New Chitose (CTS), Sapporo's airport — see our guide to the new Air Canada Vancouver and United San Francisco nonstops to Sapporo. The United service is announced from Dec 11 and Air Canada's from mid-December, so they land after the Nov 28 openings, not before.

Nagano: Karuizawa is first, Hakuba is split

Karuizawa Prince (Oct 31) opens on machine-made snow, about a 10-minute walk from Karuizawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The operator says it planned two short runs at opening and aims to have all 14 runs open by early January. It is a beginner- and family-oriented hill, not a powder destination, but it is the earliest opening in Nagano.

Hakuba does not open all at once:

  • Hakuba Goryu (Nov 21) decided its opening day in advance for the first time, using two snowmaking machines installed on the lower Toomi slope. Only that lower area is planned for opening day; the higher Alps-daira area opens when natural snow arrives.
  • Happo-one (Dec 1) lists its "Early Season" as Dec 1 – Dec 18, with peak season from Dec 19.

Nozawa Onsen (Nov 28) lists an "early-season period" from Nov 28 to Dec 18. Treat this as a soft start: the resort labels these first three weeks separately from the main season.

How to use these dates

  • Book flexible. If your trip is in the first two weeks after a resort's opening, choose refundable or changeable lodging where you can. Every resort on this list reserves the right to move its date.
  • Day one is partial. Goryu (Toomi only), Teine (Highland Zone only until Dec 5) and Furano (Furano Zone only until late December) all say so directly. Expect fewer lifts and runs than the trail map shows.
  • Hokkaido is the safer early bet. Independent snowfall analysis from JAPANSNOWLINE finds December snowfall in Hokkaido is close to January's, while in Nagano and Niigata it is closer to four-fifths. That is a statistical average, not a forecast for this year.
  • Check the resort's page the week before you go. Opening-status pages are updated more often than any guide, including this one.

Quick checklist

  • [ ] Pick your resort and confirm its planned opening on the official page linked below
  • [ ] If you are going in the first two weeks, check which zone or slope opens first
  • [ ] Niseko early season (Nov 28 – Dec 11): plan to buy passes on site, not online
  • [ ] Book changeable lodging if your dates are close to opening day
  • [ ] For North America → Hokkaido, compare the new CTS nonstops with Tokyo + domestic connections
  • [ ] Re-check the resort's opening-status page the week before you travel
